I was recently at the construction site for the new Franklin High School being built as part of the Massachusetts Model School Program. I was on-site to select boulders for the interior courtyard we designed where the boulders are prominently featured as seating and sculptural elements.
They also function, along with the seatwalls and different concrete finishes, in the overall material order of the courtyard to organize and delineate the different types of spaces. These include private, quiet nooks as well as larger, more public spaces for groups to gather and outdoor classes to take place.
J. Derenzo Company, the site contractors, had stockpiled a good selection of boulders to choose from, all of which had been saved during the excavation for the building foundation and site work. While on-site I talked with Joe Murphy of Derenzo and explained that we want it to look as if the boulders have always been there and the school and site improvements have been built around them. He was in complete agreement and was patient as I scrambled over the pile looking for the best and biggest boulders to work with.
It will be exciting to see the courtyard as well as the rest of the school site develop over the coming months. With three other Massachusetts Model Schools in construction I think its going to be a busy spring and summer for BDG. Stay tuned….
