Come on Spring!

Wtichhazel

February blues.  Almost every year most of us feel the doom and gloom of our never ending New England winter.  But hold on a minute…look outside.  What do you see?  Does ANYONE see yellow blossoms?  Here in New England or anywhere else?   Every year in our region several varieties of Witchhazel (Hamamelis species) start blooming around the middle of February into the middle of March.  It literally gets me out out of my winter misery, it marks my March birthday, and sets me on my path to spring!  Most Witchhazel varieties are NATIVE and there are many improved cultivars found in our local nurseries.

Look around, in your gardens, around your local parks and open space.  It you don’t see and smell these beautiful native plants, get them, buy them, donate them, whatever.  They will continually surprise you with their winter splendor.

Happy Birthday to the Aquarious and Pisces out there.  Look for those yellow, fragrant blossoms (not to be confused with Forsythia, please)!

Hmmm…I can’t remember ever seeing anything before crocuses, daffodils, and forsythia. Where would witchhazel be growing? Near water? In the woods? In sheltered places? In gardens? I’ll have to keep an eye out. Thanks!
