Birchwood Design Group was recently brought on board with Neimitz Design Group to design and facilitate the construction of a new outdoor patio area for a hotel in Newport. Proposed to be built within the confines of the existing outdoor eating space, the steep terrain and presence of ledge create challenges for the designers and contractors alike.
The seating area will be created with a thermal finish bluestone and surrounded by low seat walls with a granite veneer and solid bluestone cap. The patio has been terraced into three different levels to accommodate the steeply sloping grade below.
Care has been taken to create as little disturbance to the surrounding landscape as possible. The terraces are separated by sets of large granite steps and small planters that will be filled with ornamental grasses and perennials.
To accommodate a Memorial Day opening the site will be tented, with construction pushing throughout the winter. The picture to the left shows the recently scraped site. The vein of ledge shown running through the area will remain undisturbed with the bluestone patio designed and graded to be sitting just above.
