Highlight of the week is the sculpture outside the west entrance of the Dunkin Donut’s Center located in Downtown Providence. Ever notice this space? It looks as if it is underutilized and passed by. I suspect that people congregate here at night exiting the Dunk after an evening of festivities. Looking at the sculpture alone, I see the structure of the skyline and a city grid; hard and angular and steel. Then I see the shadows on the ground and I can’t help but feel playful as I see the waves and whitecaps of the Ocean State crash upon me. The berms covered in spiky, green lush Liriope mimic the wave and allow me to feel grounded and secure in this space. Even the dark pavement bands extend the shadow of the wave across the space.
I look forward to the surrounding young trees growing and creating great canopy over this sunny afternoon hot spot. Have you experienced this space at night or during the day as I have? Would something like this work along the new 195 park land with adjacent retail, office and restaurants?
